Abstract:

A modification of the usual approach to deriving the continuum equations from kinetic theory will be presented, that leads to a set of equations different from the Navier Stokes (NS) equations. At small Knudsen numbers the NS equations are recovered, but for Knudsen numbers of order unity and larger, the proposed equations provide better agreement with experimental data on shock thickness and ultrasonic wave speed.
