Abstract:
We believe that we understand, much of the behavior of two dimensional foams. In particular, we have simple laws governing their kinetics, their topological and area distributions, and the existance of a scaling state. We can simulate foam evolution with high accuracy using the Potts model. In three dimensions the picture is much less clear. However, we are beginning to be able to use Magnetic Resonance Imaging to directly answer these questions. Besides the properties of so-called 'ideal' foams, we are now able to simulate complicating phenomena like irregular initial conditions, gravitational drainage and shear flow.Date: Friday, December 7, 2001
