This will be an elementary introduction to representation theory. Because I want to stress the connection between group representations and classical harmonic analysis, I will discuss only unitary linear representations of topological groups. I will give basic definitions and examples, and then give an overview of the work of Harish-Chandra on the Plancherel theorem and some results on character theory.
