I will explain how non-commutative deformations of the derived category of coherent sheaves are realized physically at the level of the supersymmetric sigma-model. In the presence of both noncommutativity and the B-field, it turns out that the most appropriate description of the geometry of D-branes is in terms of generalized complex structures introduced by N. Hitchin. The category of D-branes on a generalized complex manifold interpolates between the derived category of coherent sheaves and the derived Fukaya category.Date: Thursday, April 8, 2004
