We will give a dynamic formulation of van der Waerden's theorem and show how this dynamical statement follows in turn from an assertion relating to the "enveloping semigroup" of a dynamical system on a compact space. The latter assertion will be a consequence of a general theorem relating to compact semigroups. This theorem has an algebraic character, and is of interest even for finite semigroups.
