Abstract:
The study of orbit equivalence of nonsingular dynamical systems was reduced some 30 years ago to the study of isomorphism equivalence of measurable flows. In joint work with A.H. Dooley and J. Hawkins, we construct a new isomorphism invariant of a certain class of measurable flow, with which we are able to construct an explicit, uncountable collection of non-isomorphic flows (all of which are approximately transitive, and therefore of zero entropy), thereby corresponding to an uncountable family of non-orbit-equivalent nonsingular systems. No background in orbit equivalence or nonsingular dynamics will be assumed.Date: Tuesday, October 13, 2009
