I'll give a new construction of the fermionic vertex operator, as a direct limit of correspondences on finite-dimensional grassmannians. this operator appears in the cohomology of hilbert schemes, the representation theory of the virasoro algebra, and principle vertex operator constructions. I'll show how the equivariant localization theorem ties the various definitions of this operator together, and leads to a short proof of the boson-fermion correspondence.
