Self-similar tilings are infinite tilings of the plane made from finitely many tile shapes and satisfying a nice geometric property. They have been studied from a dynamical perspective for a few decades now, and nearly all the literature concerns tilings with ``finite local complexity": adjacent tiles are only allowed to meet in finitely many ways. However, self-similar tilings that do not have finite local complexity arise quite naturally. In this talk we will see an assortment of examples, and we will discuss how generalized beta-transformations can be used to determine whether or not a self-similar tiling has finite local complexity.Date: Tuesday, May 04, 2010
