The endoscopy theory aims to build a part of the conjectural functoriality principle by means of the stabilization of the trace formula. An identity of orbital integrals, the so-called "fundamental lemma" is an important ingredient of this theory. I will explain the role of the fundamental lemma as well as elements of its proof.
