Abstract:
Virtual knot theory is a extension of classical knot theory to knots in thickened surfaces, stabilized up to 1-handle addition and subtraction. Classical knot theory embeds in virtual knot theory. Virtual knot theory has a diagrammatic representation that is a direct generalization of the knot diagrams of classical knot theory. This talk will discuss how classical knot invariants extend to invariants of virtual knots. In particular we discuss extensions of Khovanov homology to virtual knot theory and some of the properties of such extensions.Date: Thursday, November 11, 2010
