I'll present a simple but illuminating instance of some recent work with Okounkov and Nekrasov on the equivariant K-theory of the Hilbert scheme. In particular I'll show how some elementary symmetric function theory combined with the work of Haiman combine to give a vertex operator on the K-theory of the Hilbert scheme of C^2, which generalizes previously studied vertex operators on its cohomology groups.
