Recently (combining methods from geometry and dynamics of geometric flows on hyperbolic spaces) we have shown that every closed hyperbolic 3-manifold contains an essential closed hyperbolic surface. This is known as the Surface Subgroup Theorem. I will discuss this results and its connections with the conjectured virtual classification of hyperbolic 3-manifolds (Joint work with J. Kahn).
