I will explain the GIT construction moduli spaces of curves. Especially, I will elaborate on how the resulting moduli spaces differ according to the choices made duing the construction, and how one can efficiently determine or at least predict the (in)stabiliy of a given variety. Time permitting, I'll give a brief overview of a GIT-free construction.
