Mirror symmetry is a phenomenon first discovered by string theorists around 1990, and which has led to the creation of a great deal of interesting mathematics over the last twenty years.

I will give an overview of mirror symmetry, and explain a thread of ideas, starting with the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture of 1996, which has connected mirror symmetry to the new field of tropical geometry. This has produced exciting combinatorial approaches to thinking about mirror symmetry, as well as applications of mirror symmetry to more classical problems in algebraic geometry.
