Abstract:

Bowen showed that if (X,f) is an expansive system with specification, then every potential function satisfying a certain regularity condition, now called the Bowen property, has a unique equilibrium state. We show that uniqueness persists if all obstructions to specification and the Bowen property are thermodynamically small. Applications include the fact that every subshift factor of a beta shift has a unique measure of maximal entropy, which answers an open question of Klaus Thomsen, and that every Holder continuous potential on a beta shift has a unique equilibrium state, which generalises a result of Peter Walters.
