The purpose of this talk will be to survey some recent results and conjectures which show a deep connection between (cohomology of) moduli spaces of vector bundles (or, more generally, principal bundles with respect to a reductive group G) over some algebraic surfaces and affine Lie algebras and their cousins (such as W-algebras); in particular I shall try to give a mathematical formulation of (at least some parts of) a conjecture of Alday, Gaiotto and Tachikawa which predicts a relation between super-symmetric 4-dimensional gauge theories and certain 2-dimensional conformal field theories.
