Nilsystems arise naturally as factors in certain problems in ergodic theory and in topological dynamics. It is natural to try to search for nilsystems that are factors of classical families of systems. Surprisingly, many natural classes of systems do not admit any nilsystems as factors, other than the rotations. Joint work with Bryna Kra and Alejandro Maass.
