Abstract:

Logarithmic Gromov-Witten invariants generalize relative Gromov-Witten invariants, which count curves on a variety satisfying certain tangency conditions.

I will report on work of Qile Chen, Abramovich-Chen and Abramovich-Chen-Gillam-Marcus, and closely related work of Gross and Siebert. The main construction is that of logarithmic stable maps, proposed by Bernd Siebert in a 2001 lecture.

I will discuss the background and main ideas involved in such a construction, and describe an example where interesting geometry arises.
