Abstract:

The Cohomological-excess is a measure of the topological complexity of a complex algebraic variety. Recently Looijenga showed upper-bounds on the cohomolgical excess of M_g and certain open subvarieties of its Deligne-Mumford compactification. We derive a lower bound for a subset of these open subvarieties and show that Looijenga's bounds are sharp in this case.
