I will sketch the Chern-Weil construction for transitive Lie algebroids due to Kazhdan and Beilinson. As a result we will obtain the Chern-Weil map from invariant polynomials on the Lie algebra of a Lie group G to the de Rham cohomology of the base of a prinicipal G-bundle which yields the characteristic classes of the latter. Time permitting, I will sketch an extension of the Chern-Weil theory which is the de Rham analog of the construction of characteristic classes via transgression.
