I will motivate and give a survey of a circle of ideas regarding the geometry and cohomology of manifolds having non-trivial global holomorphic 1-forms, known under the name of generic vanishing theory. While insisting on the most elementary aspects, I will also briefly mention how recent developments based on modern homological algebra and Hodge theory have increased its range of applications to basic problems like the study of zeros of holomorphic 1-forms.
