After reviewing/defining some prerequisite notions (such as the logarithmic de Rham complex, the cyclic covering, and the Hodge-de Rham spectral sequence), we sketch the proof by Esnault and Viehweg of the Kodaira vanishing theorem, modulo the E_1 degeneration of the spectral sequence.
