I will give a general introduction to the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism for field theory, working out the example of Yang-Mills theory. (I will concentrate on the classical case, with only some brief remarks on the quantum case.)

I will assume that the audience is familiar with the Euler-Lagrange equations associated to an action, and with gauge symmetry.
