Abstract:
I will first describe work of Thom on classifying manifolds up to cobordism. In this context, a genus may be thought of as a homomorphism from a cobordism theory to a commutative ring. Theorems of Hirzebruch then give a classification of genera of certain classes of manifolds. I will give some examples of genera and point out some applications, from the point of view of algebraic topology. Lastly, I will mention joint work with Michael Mandell on genera in complex cobordism.Date: Wednesday, January 20, 2016
