We study several far-reaching extensions of two classical theorems in ergodic theory: the Poincare recurrence theorem and the mean ergodic theorem. These results have been extended to specific sequences and to multiple versions. In this talk I will emphasize the connections between the set of eigenvalues of a system and the kinds of multiple ergodic theorems one obtains for that system.
