I will outline the basic framework of tropicalization, through which piecewise linear geometry of graphs reflects aspects of the algebraic geometry of curves, touching on relations to semistable reduction and Berkovich’s theory of nonarchimedean analytic spaces. As time permits, I will discuss how this framework is used to reprove fundamental results on the algebraic side, such as the Brill-Noether theorem.
