Abstract:

When is it possible to embed a compact, genus g, Riemann surface in complex projective r-space as an algebraic curve of degree d? The question, raised in 1874, was solved a century later. The theory that originated from this question is still central to algebraic geometry, and has been studied over the years from a remarkable number of angles, some of which I will illustrate. I will also discuss the theory from the point of view of curves defined over the field of rational numbers.
