Abstract:

What are symmetric functions and why do we study them? This talk gives an introduction to the symmetric functions, focusing on the Schur function basis. We will use combinatorics to define the Schur functions and to describe their multiplication. We will discuss connections with other areas of math and physics and explore some generalizations and open problems.
