Abstract:

The tropicalization of Grassmannians, flag varieties and other similar spaces can be described in terms of point configurations in affine buildings. Natural Lie-theoretic functions on these spaces (like Plucker-coordinates) have natural tropicalizations. One expects these tropical functions to capture piecewise-linear geometry in the building.

I will explain how to compute these tropical functions. The main result of the talk will be an alternative (and more efficient) way to compute these tropical invariants using only the metric geometry of the building. The proof of this relies on a linearization of classical algorithms like max-flow/min-cut. Parts of this talk come from joint work with Sammy Luo and Evan O'Dorney.
