Abstract:

We start with a translation surface which can be thought of as a polygon in the plane with sides identified by parallel translation. Translation surfaces have straight line flows. The set of all translation surfaces with specified cone angle singularities fit together to form moduli spaces. There is an action of the group SL(2,R) on these moduli spaces. Understanding the orbit of a given translation surface under this SL(2,R) action often tells one a great deal about the surface itself. I will discuss some of the ground breaking work of Eskin-Mirzakhani-Mohammadi in this subject and then consider a related problem of studying translation surfaces whose orbit under the diagonal action are divergent. This is joint work with Paul Apisa and Jon Chaika.
