In positive characteristic there are fibrations between smooth varieties of which every fiber is singular. These form a significant obstacle to extending the recent progress on the birational geometry of threefolds to higher dimensions. I will discuss some recent results regarding the geometry of varieties over function fields, which aim to overcome this obstacle.
