Abstract:
A classical result of Furstenberg from 1967 states that the only proper closed subsets of the circle which are invariant under multiplication by both two and three are finite. Since then, several generalizations of this result have been proven. Along these lines, I will discuss the notion of a Furstenberg action of a group, which are systems possessing some of the key features of x2/x3 on the circle, and describe some new examples of such actions which highlight some interesting problems.
