We describe a construction of abelian group actions which contradict the classical Katok-Spatzier conjecture: all abelian actions without rank one factors are algebraic. These examples are obtained from perturbations of product actions via time changes. We will highlight features of these examples and why they do not contradict known rigidity theorems.
