In this talk we discuss how the consideration of $A_r$ singularities, singularities which are of the form $k[x,y]/(y^2-x^{r+1})$, arose from the historical development of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ and $\overline{\mathcal M}_{g,n}$, and how the inclusion of these singularities enables computations of the integral Chow ring of $\overline{\mathcal M}_{g,n}$ for new values of $(g,n)$.
