Over the past decade there has been the discovery of a surprising amount of structural restrictions of automorphism groups of subshifts of various forms which have "low complexity". In this talk I will try and talk about a new method, using partial actions, which helps explain and strengthen several results along these lines. This talk will include joint work with Forte Shinko.
