Abstract:
The zero-in-the-spectrum question is whether the spectrum of the differential-form Laplacian, on a complete Riemannian manifold, always contains zero in some degree. I will explain the question, give its relationships to combinatorial group theory (deficiencies of groups) and topology (Euler characteristics of 4-manifolds), and give partial results toward an answer.Date: Friday, March 13, 1998
