Abstract:
Using the theory of random walk on the chambers of hyperplane rearrangements, we define a notion of card shuffling for any finite Coxeter group or real hyperplane arrangement. We focus on the Coxeter case and the relation of these card shuffling measures with the finite groups of Lie type. The theory will be illustrated for the simplest non-trivial example: the symmetric group on three symbols. We conclude with some open problems.Date: Friday, February 26, 1999
