Abstract:
The behaviors of far-from-equilibrium, spatiotemporal chaotic (STC) systems have been studied quite extensively in experiments and in numerical simulations; however, an understanding any deeper than the descriptive is largely lacking. The on-going work to understand these systems largely employs techniques successfully used to study low- dimensional chaos, pattern formation, or equilibrium systems. I will describe selected techniques and terminology from these fields necessary to understand current efforts in the study of spatiotemporal chaos, and I will try to give a flavor of the questions that researchers in STC are trying to answer.Date: Monday, February 5, 2001
